Nespresso and Keurig are the biggest players in the pod-based coffee industry. It wasn’t that long ago that almost no one had either Keurig coffee maker of a Nespresso machine but today they are very common.
If you are new to automatic single serve coffee makers then you may be excused for not understanding the difference between Keurig and Nespresso. Although they both are similar they are in fact quite different.
Keurig coffee makers brew filtered, drip-style coffee one cup at a time in servings typically ranging in size from 6-12 ounces while Nespresso machines brew servings of unfiltered espresso typically ranging in size from 1-3 ounces.
Although both coffee brewing systems are similar in their ease of use and level of automation the actual coffee or espresso produced taste quite different and are typically considered to be inferior to their manual counterparts.
Let’s go into greater detail on what make these two styles of coffee so different and popular despite their obvious shortcomings in quality.

What’s So Special About Keurig Coffee Makers? Why They’re So Popular
The Keurig System uses special cups, known as K-cups for brewing coffee. These are widely available in just about any supermarket nationwide and you can buy just about any brand to use with any k-cup coffee maker you might own.
You don’t even have to brew coffee with them.
Companies have branched out into many different flavor circles to make different types of k-cups ranging in flavors from Lemonade, to Chai Latte, to French vanilla, just to name a few.
One of the best things about Keurig these days is that third party companies are free to produce just about any type or kind of k-cup they can imagine. And given the fact that Keurig has not limited it’s licensing like Nespresso has, a lot of companies have come out with Keurig compatible products giving you an enormous amount of choice.

As for the coffee produced in k-cups it does tend to be on the weak side however because the brewers are limited by the size of the pre-measured, pre-packaged k-cups which can usually only hold a little over 12 grams of coffee grind which isn’t really enough grind to produce a good cup of coffee over 6-ounces or so.
Basically, a Keurig brewer will pierce a hole in the top and the bottom of a k-cup allowing hot water to pass through the grounds on the inside which are frequently housed in a small filter pouch. This is why Keurig so closely resembles drip coffee or other forms of filtered coffee.
This is similar to how Nespresso machines work except that gravity feed the water into the cup with Keurig and high-pressure forces the water through Nespresso capsules which are considerably smaller than k-cups.

Why Then Is Nespresso Popular? And Are Nespresso Pods Compatible With Keurig Machines?
Nespresso pods make small portion sizes because the coffee is meant to replicate the coffee produced in a traditional espresso maker which is far more potent and rich than standard drip coffee.
Nespresso has capitalized on the gourmet home espresso market where simplicity and ease of use is valued over all else. For people that don’t want the weak coffee that is frequently found coming from Keurig machines Nespresso offers a great way to make a strong double shot, Americano, or Lungo that can rival places like Starbucks.

Being one of the newer products available in the market Nespresso has been very successful. Initially developed by Nestle, they now produce espresso machines and accessories themselves preventing third party brewers from being produced. Pods on the other hand are made by anyone so you can be sure about the quality of the machines and still get lots of variety in the espressos that you brew.
Usually Nespresso machines take lacquered aluminum capsules that are for single use however some third party capsule manufacturers use plastic which keeps costs lower. On newer Vertuo machines bar-coded capsules limit third parties from making capsules to ensure the espresso produced is up to Nespresso’s standards.

You should also keep in mind that in 2014, Nespresso started a new line of products known as the Vertuoline. This line uses different different capacity and shaped capsules that are not compatible with the other machines known as “Original line” machines.
To this day Nespresso units come in one of the two varieties. You can use original style capsules in units like the Lattissima Plus, Expert, or CitiZ for instance but models like the Vertuo or Vertuo Plus use the proprietary style capsules from the Vertuoline.

Which One Should You Go For? Is One Better Than The Other?
There are actually quite a lot of differences between the two! Although seemingly similar Keurig and Nespresso cater to completely different people. If you like drinking multiple large cups of coffee then picking up a Keurig machine or a k-cup maker from a different brand will be worth it. I have a list of my preferred brewers that make k-cup coffee here and a list of budget k-cup machines I’ve reviewed here that you can read through.
If however you like to drink much stronger coffee, shoot straight shots of espresso, or mix espresso with frothed milk to make cafe style drinks like mochas, lattes, and cappuccinos then a Nespresso machine will be right for you.
There are however two other options that you may want to consider if you like to have coffee on some days and espresso on others. That would be the Nespresso Vertuo Pro or the Keurig K-Cafe, both of which are supposed to bridge the divide and make either style of drink from the same pod.
You can see this comparison of the Keurig K-Cafe to the Vertuoline machines here but to summarize I believe both systems fail at producing good coffee of each style. I would prefer to have a dedicated unit to make coffee and a dedicated unit to make espresso… but that’s just me.
So, the main differences between Keurig and Nespresso coffee systems can be summed up as follows:
- Traditional Aspect: Keurig is like a traditional version of Coffee that has been established in the market for a long time and that most people just prefer to stick to. However, if you’re not afraid of trying out new things, Nespresso is one of he newer things that has made a good name for itself in a really short time.
- Versatility: Keurig is a lot ahead of Nespresso when it comes to versatility. Nespresso only lets you make Espresso unless you opt for one of the Vertuo machines that let you make coffee too, while Keurig machines allow you to make Tea, coffee, espresso, and even hot chocolate depending on the k-cup you use!
- Exclusiveness: There are a lot of people who love tea just as much as they love coffee. These people mostly tend to go with the Keurig makers because the tea-making option is exclusive to Keurig.
- Functionality: In case of Keurig, you can actually decide how you prepare your coffee- you have a certain degree of control to prepare it according to your tastes. You can use less or more water per cup, brew slower for a strong brew, and choose from a wide array of k-cups to buy giving you a lot of versatility. With Nespresso you do have a lot of choices too but not quite as much. Their machines mostly operates by themselves although most offer different brew size options that work for a lot of people.
- K-Cups VS Capsules: The Keurig offers you K-cups to use while the Nespresso offers you capsules. Not only are the cups/capsules designed to produce different styles of coffee, drip style vs espresso style coffee, the k-cups are usually cheaper so being a Keurig user will usually cost you less over the long term. There are even some k-cups made for the specific purpose of making strong coffee. You can see my reviews of these strong k-cups here.
- Availability and Variety: Keurig K-Cups are available from a lot of sellers and so it’s available in a lot of varieties, blends and combinations. There are so many different types you can even find very specific things like low acid k cups! The Nespresso capsules, on the other hand, makes its own products and hence these are a little more limited and this might take time to get used to if you’ve already been using Keurig for a while.
- Aesthetic Aspect: This is yet another important thing to consider. Most of the people seem to say that the Nespresso machines take the lead when it comes to the Aesthetic aspects of the available models.
- User Reviews: The people who have had the chance to use both and compare them and can speak from their personal experience mostly seem to agree on one thing: Nespresso makes better espresso than a K-Cafe machine and Keurig makes better coffee than a Nespresso Vertuo! Most people also like the quality of the Nespresso units over Keurig units too although staying away from the cheapest k-cup brewers can go a long way.

Which One Should You Buy?
Honestly, both systems are equally great options for people who like to drink coffee and espresso. If you prefer one style coffee over the other then go with that.
Nespresso units are fancier machines too because they need to brew coffee under pressure, as such their machines do cost more so if you are price sensitive then a Keurig k-cup brewer might be the better choice. You can get a machine for less in most cases and the ongoing cost of buying k-cups will be cheaper than buying Nespresso capsules.
I have both the Essenza Mini on my counter as well as a Keurig K-Mini Plus and I use them both. You just have to understand what your exact needs are, and it becomes increasingly simple to find the right one for yourself. For instance, if you want to make tea as well, the Nespresso is obviously not the right choice for you.
Of all the Nespresso machines available right now I recommend most people consider buying the Nespresso Pixie first because of build quality and value for dollars spent. Of course it won’t brew coffee – just espresso so if you want coffee then you have to go for Keurig.
My favorite Keurig device has to be the new Keurig K-Elite. It is built very well, has a large reservoir, offers strong-brew options and multiple cup sizes at the touch of a button but it is a little big… that’s why I have the K-Mini on my counter.

Nespresso Vs Keurig Coffee: What’s Different & Which is Better?
When you’re looking to make the upgrade from a standard drip-style coffee maker, it can be hard to decide which high-tech option is best!
Many people are familiar with the Keurig and what it has to offer, but what about the other brands out there?
Though fewer people are familiar with them, Nespresso coffee makers are also an extremely viable option.
To find the best option for you, it is important to make sure you compare the options out there.

A truly versatile device, you can use the Keurig to make coffee, tea, hot chocolate and even fruit drinks and soups.
Consequently, it’s truly a great option for those who want one machine that can do many different kinds of jobs.
Keurig machines also tend to be quite compact so you won’t need to worry about the device taking up your limited counter space.
You can also rest assured that the space it does take up, it will more than pay back!
Many also find that they can save money when using K-Cups rather than buying coffee regularly.
Many of the machines themselves also come at a great cost.
Pros of Buying a Keurig over a Nespresso
- Keurig offers single-serve or Carafe packs.
- Also capable of making tea, hot chocolate and more.
- Capable of brewing in under 4 minutes.
- Brews at about 192 degrees.
- Offers over 200 flavor varieties.
- The less expensive between the two options.
Cons
- K-Cups aren’t easily recyclable.
- May not create as high-quality results as Nespresso.
- Cannot brew espresso.
Usability Considerations
Keurig machines are known to be quite easy to use, allowing you to make the perfect cup of coffee with the touch of a button.
They are also known to have a lot of features, so that whatever you’re brewing will come out with ideal results.
Furthermore, it’s a device that is typically pretty easy to clean so you won’t have to worry about that regular cleaning becoming a source of frustration.
Another aspect that many users love is the “strong” setting that allows you to make a cup that packs more of a punch.
It’s truly a great device overall for those who want to be able to brew a wider variety of beverages.
While some do find that the resulting coffee may not be as perfect as other options, it’s still a great choice for those who aren’t too picky about their energy boost.
Does Keurig or Nespresso Cost More
When it comes to these kinds of single-serve machines, there are two prices that are worth taking into account.
The first is the cost of the machine itself.
Keurig machines can run you anywhere from $75 to $150 depending on the model and features you’re looking for.
The second price to pay attention to is that of the K-Cup pods that these machines use to make drinks.
Typically, K-Cup pods can come in as low as $.35 for each serving, but can hover anywhere between that amount and $2.25 per serving, depending on the type you get.
To further explain that, there aren’t just K-Cup pods but also K-Vue, K-Mug, and K-Carafe for those who want to make a larger amount.
Keep in mind that you can also find re-usable filters that will allow you to use less expensive kinds of coffee in Keurig machines.
Results
The overall concept here is that the Keurig may not be able to measure up exactly to the Nespresso when it comes to resulting coffee taste, but it’s far from poor quality!
Furthermore, the Keurig is able to make many different beverages, which is quite a payoff for a slightly less authentic cup of coffee.
It’s also important to keep in mind that Keurig isn’t going to be the ideal option for espresso lovers.
However, if you’re okay with accepting a substitute then it’s worth noting that the Dark Magic K-Cup is a very similar option.
You can really have a lot of fun with the Keurig, making many different drinks that people of all ages will enjoy.
Is Nespresso Better Than Keurig?
For those who are looking for the higher-quality, more specific option Nespresso is the ideal option.
These devices are known to last longer and even offer a longer warranty than Keurig models.
While both devices are quite easy to clean, the Nespresso is thought to be slightly more so.
Keep in mind that this option is going to have fewer models to choose from, which can give the appearance of quality of quantity.
It also uses much fewer capsule options, but instead is made to offer higher quality results.
Depending on the model you get, you may be able to brew coffee and espresso or just espresso.
Some machines even offer a frother that is built right in for added convenience.

For example, the earlier mentioned built-in frother is a great add-on.
It’s also a highly compact device, creating a smaller footprint.
The size selection is very easy to use and allows you to get just the amount you want.
As an added bonus for those who care about eco-friendly devices, the capsules for these machines can also be recycled at stations.
Essentially, for those who don’t need to make tea or other beverages but want a pristine cup of coffee, this is a fantastic option to try.
Cost
Nespresso machines do tend to be more expensive than Keurig machines.
In most cases, Nespresso models can range from anywhere between $140 and $300.
That said, in some cases you can find these machines a little more cheaply if you’re okay with buying a discontinued model.
Many also find that these machines are more durable when compared to Keurig machines, as they tend to be made with a thicker plastic.
You can also get a longer warranty with a Nespresso machine, which can be extremely helpful if something should go wrong with your machine.
Nespresso capsules can also range from $.75 to $1.40 per serving, depending on the model you need it for, and flavor you prefer.
Results
While Nespresso may not have as many beverage options as the Keurig, many find that it’s able to brew higher-quality coffee and espresso.
Because of that, it’s a great option for those who don’t really need to make tea or other flavored drinks with the machine.
It can also be a good choice for those who want the highest possible quality coffee drinks.
If you’re looking to save money over going to a coffee shop for your drinks, then a Nespresso machine can help to achieve that over time.
Which Is Best?
This is really going to depend on your individual needs and budget.
If you want something less costly that can provide more options as far as potential beverages, then the Keurig is the way to go.
On the other hand, if you don’t mind spending a little more for the highest quality coffee, then a Nespresso is a great choice! You can also compare different Nespresso models to find the best one for you!
Both machines truly have a lot to offer to their owners.
Both are also quite easy to clean and can save money over frequent trips to coffee shops.
Just make sure to take into account what you’re looking for, as well as the cost of pods or capsules if you’re interested in either of these options!
